Xiaomi has announced its latest Loop LiquidCool Technology, inspired by cooling solutions used in the aerospace industry. The Chinese mobile brand claims that this new liquid cooling technology offers twice the cooling capability of vapor chamber (VC) cooling solutions used in the latest Android smartphones.
According to Xiaomi, Loop LiquidCool technology makes use of the “capillary effect” to direct the liquid cooling agent toward the heat source. The heat then vaporizes the cooling agent, which efficiently disperses the heat to a cooler area in the system.
The vapor condenses again in the cooler area and is redirected to the heat source for the next cycle. This continuous cycle will help to keep the system cool.
Xiaomi will add a heat pipe system, an evaporator, a condenser, a refill chamber, and gas and liquid pipes to make it work. It also uses a ring-shaped pump with a special gas pipe design that decreases air passage resistance by 30%. The maximum heat transfer capacity, on the other hand, is said to be increased by up to 100%.
According to the company’s blog post, the new technology was tested on a custom Xiaomi MIX 4, which replaced its original vapor chamber cooling system with the Loop LiquidCool solution. Xiaomi claims that the new system was able to keep things cooler by 8.6 degrees celsius during a 30-minute Genshin Impact gameplay test at 60 frames per second with the highest video settings.
Xiaomi’s Loop LiquidCool Technology vs. Conventional VC cooling
While conventional VC cooling or Vapour Chamber cooling employs a similar technique to keep things cool, it lacks a separate channel for liquids and gases, which Xiaomi’s Loop LiquidCool does. This prevents the mixing of hot gases and cool liquids within the cycle, negatively affecting the overall system’s performance.
Loop LiquidCool utilizes a Tesla valve to ensure that the system’s flow is unidirectional. The valve permits the passage of liquid while preventing the reintroduction of gases. Xiaomi claims that the technology’s “one-way circulation” is the reason it outperforms conventional cooling solutions.
Xiaomi plans to incorporate Loop LiquidCool Technology into its products in the second half of 2022.
