Through its official Facebook page, PNP has laid out tips and precautions to avoid cybercrime, from browsing the internet to protecting the devices.
Here are the summarized tips of PNP to prevent cybercrime.
1. When using social media, be careful not to accept random friend requests.
2. Don’t open links and attachments from suspicious emails with embedded links, as they may be classified as phishing emails. You may contact the company or organization to verify if the email is legit or fake.
3. Don’t give away vital information, especially your contact and bank details. In addition, constantly change and remember your password.
4. When using mobile devices, limit using your contact numbers online as attackers may collect these digits.
5. Avoid unsecured WiFi hotspots. Set your device not automatically to connect to external sources.
6. When not in use, disable Bluetooth to avoid attackers exploiting open connections.
7. Download mobile apps or PC programs from trusted sources. This is to avoid drive-by download attacks involving malicious programs installed on the device without the user’s consent.
8. Enable layers of security by using passwords and, if available, use other encryption features like a two-factor authentication system.
The PNP advised those who may encounter similar issues to contact the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP ACG) via email at acg@pnp.gov.ph or phone at (632) 723 0401, local 7483.
