Game publisher Garena has announced that the Free Fire World Series (FFWS) will return in 2022 to Singapore and will take place in Sentosa, an island on the southern coast. The battle royale game’s international competition is slated to start in May, gathering squads globally to compete for the title of world champions. The play-ins will begin on May 14, and the grand finals are scheduled for May 21.
The World Series signifies Garena’s ongoing efforts to engage and excite the global community through competitive and engaging esports content while putting the safety of all participants first. Garena will ensure that all activities adhere to current public health and travel protocols.
Free Fire World Series (FFWS) 2022 Sentosa will bring together 22 teams from 13 different regions to vie for the title of Free Fire world champions. Regional Free Fire tournaments will determine the squads qualifying for the FFWS. The regions are North America, India, Pakistan, Latin America, Taiwan, Malaysia & Cambodia & Philippines (MCP), Brazil, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
The Play-ins will feature 12 teams competing for a spot in the Finals. The top two squads from the Play-ins will join the top ten seeds to form the 12 teams that will compete for the FFWS 2022 Sentosa championship.
Two representatives from the Malaysia, Cambodia, and Philippines (MCP) region will compete in this year’s FFWS Finals. Local and regional fans can expect a fierce battle for these two spots while rooting for their country’s representatives.
The teams will compete in six rounds – across three maps – to be the last one standing. The points will be granted based on round ranking and kill totals.
Free Fire was named “Esports Mobile Game of the Year” at the Esports Awards 2021 in November 2021, marking the game’s second consecutive year with the honor. Meanwhile, in May 2021, it achieved a record-breaking viewership for the Free Fire World Series 2021 Singapore (FFWS 2021 SG) across multiple platforms. According to Esports Charts, the Finals of the FFWS 2021 SG attracted a peak of 5.4 million concurrent online viewers, the highest peak viewership of any esports match in history, excluding Chinese platforms.
