Globe set for surge in digital streaming demand due to network expansion
Globe’s capital expenditure program, which is primarily focused on data expansion, has equipped the company’s network to handle the increased demand for digital services. The telco is modernizing its systems in anticipation of increased customer demand for streaming and other data-intensive products in the years ahead.
According to YouGov’s 2022 Global Media Outlook Report, even in a post-pandemic scenario, video streaming services are “likely to register the biggest growth in consumption this year, with a Growth Driver score of 36 percent.”
The report also showed that “in the coming year, as ‘work from home’ routines and entertainment habits linger, on-demand streaming services and social media platforms are set to continue to keep consumers hooked.”
Globe allocated the majority of its unprecedented PHP 92.8 billion capital expenditure program last year to data network upgrades in anticipation of changing market behaviors and needs. The company previously predicted that the surge in data demand caused by the pandemic would continue even after quarantine restrictions were lifted.
Globe’s accelerated expansion strategy includes the construction of over 1,400 new cell sites in 2021, the upgrade of over 22,000 mobile sites, and the recent rollout of 1.4 million fiber-to-the-home lines. Additionally, the company activated over 2,000 5G outdoor and in-building solutions.
Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu shared that their efforts are “focused on continuously upgrading” their network and ensuring that they “constantly improve customer experience despite the growing demand.”
Cu added that their “network upgrades have been up to the task” even during the pandemic, “as shown by higher average speeds and consistency scores.”
As per Ookla’s Q4 2021 data, Globe improved download speeds by 51% and upload speeds by 24% compared to Q1 2021.
Moreover, Globe’s consistency score increased significantly last year, rising from 70.43 in Q1 2021 to 79.02 in Q4 2021, in line with global benchmarks.
Globe’s Speed Score increased significantly from 22.95 in Q1 2021 to 32.67 in Q4 2021. Globe has consistently improved its consistency and Speed Scores quarter over quarter.
Globe also recently received Ookla’s Best 5G Video Experience Award in the Philippines. The global network intelligence and connectivity insights firm launched the video awards earlier this year, based on the performance of local mobile networks in the third and fourth quarters of 2021.
This year, Globe committed PHP 89 billion in capital expenditures to continue its aggressive site builds, site upgrade to 4G/LTE, acceleration of its 5G rollout, and faster fiberization across the country.
