Tech giant Apple announced that it is discontinuing its line of one of its most iconic media players, the iPod. The company said that its last model, the iPod touch, will be available until supplies last.
The original iPod, released in 2001 by the late Apple boss Steve Jobs, could store 1,000 songs and last up to 10 hours. iPod mini, iPod nano, iPod touch, and iPod shuffle were among the many subsequent iPod variants.
Apple last updated the iPod touch in 2019, although it was generally similar to the previous model.
The media player device had “redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared,” said Apple senior vice-president of worldwide marketing Greg Joswiak.
Similar to other digital music players, certain iPod models can function as external data storage devices. Prior to macOS 10.15, Apple’s iTunes software (and other alternative software) could be used to transfer music, photos, videos, contact information, e-mail settings, Web bookmarks, calendars, and even games from computers running specific versions of Apple macOS and Microsoft Windows operating systems to devices supporting these features.
Prior to the release of iOS 5, the media player included with the iPhone and iPad was branded with the iPod name and consisted of ‘Music’ and ‘Videos’ apps on the iPod Touch.
As of iOS 5, separate ‘Music’ and ‘Videos’ apps are standard on all iOS-powered devices. Although the iPhone and iPad have essentially the same media player capabilities as the iPod line, they are generally considered separate products.
