'Up to 200 Mbps': NTC OKs Musk's Starlink registration in PH
The National Telecommunications Commission or NTC has approved the registration of SpaceX’s Starlink Internet Services Philippines Inc.
Billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink service, or the low-earth orbit satellite, will bring broadband technology that can reach even remote areas.
In a statement on May 27, the NTC said it approved Starlink Internet Services Philippines’ registration as a value-added service (VAS) provider, allowing the firm to directly access satellite systems, and build and operate broadband facilities to offer internet services in the country.
NTC commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba said that the agency is “steadfast in helping ensure that the roll-out of Starlink’s internet access services will be done expeditiously and professionally.”
On the other hand, SpaceX’s counsel Atty. Bien Marquez of Quisumbing Torres law firm thanked the NTC for its prompt action in issuing Starlink’s VAS License. “We would like to thank the NTC for issuing Starlink’s VAS license 30 minutes after we submitted our application with complete requirements,” added Marquez.
Marquez also said that it shows how serious the government is in solving the connectivity needs of Filipinos in unserved and underserved areas. Moreover, it will help in preparing for the event of natural disasters and calamities.
Starlink is expected to deliver high-speed, low-latency satellite internet service with download speeds between 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to 200 Mbps.
With the approval of the VAS, the Philippines will be the first country in Southeast Asia to offer Starlink services. Starlink is a division of SpaceX, the aerospace manufacturer and space transportation service founded by Elon Musk. Starlink provides satellite internet services and has more than 1,500 low-Earth orbit satellites.
To recall, the DTI has announced that Elon Musk’s SpaceX will soon enter the Philippine telecommunications market. SpaceX made its decision after President Rodrigo Duterte signed a bill amending the Public Service Act (PSA) to permit 100 percent foreign ownership.
