Globe on Friday announced that it started temporarily blocking all text messages from Prepaid and Postpaid numbers containing Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) or website links. The said move is a step against spam and scam messages.
According to Globe, they made the announcement amid escalating reports of messages related to scams and spam, including SMS (short message service) from unknown numbers that bear customers' complete names.
This week, a new measure will be implemented by Globe to prevent the delivery of text messages containing clickable links from all networks.
Globe chief information security officer Anton Bonifacio said that prior to implementing the said measure, they were already "blocking access to malicious links in text messages to help protect customers." Now, they're "blocking the actual message," and if the text message has "a link of any kind," they're not going to deliver it.
Early this month, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) ordered telecommunication companies to block links and quick response (QR) codes on text messages amid the increase of spam text messages, some of which contain the recipient's full name.
Until the approval of the SIM Registration bill, blocking of SMS messages with links will be in effect, as per Globe.
