What happens if you fail to register your Smart or TNT SIM card?

Since the telcos launched their online SIM registration platforms last December 27, 2022, over 20 million Filipinos have already registered their SIM cards, with Smart recording 10.3 million registrants as of January 16, 2023.

All existing SIM users in the Philippines, prior to the start of SIM registration, have until April 26, 2023, to comply. However, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) may opt to extend the deadline by up to 120 days.

This is the most frequently asked question by SIM users. What exactly happens if I fail to register my SIM card within the deadline? According to the SIM Registration Law, failure to register your SIM within the prescribed period will result in automatic SIM deactivation. However, as per DICT, deactivated SIMs still have a 5-day grace period for registration and reactivation.

Smart Communications, the wireless arm of PLDT, released a statement informing its subscribers about scenarios they might encounter if their SIM cards are not registered.

Once your SIM card is automatically deactivated, you will face the following complications:
  • No outgoing and incoming calls
    • You are unable to make or receive urgent and important calls to and from family and friends, as well as communicate with your school, work, or business colleagues.
  • No sending and receiving messages
    • In addition to not being able to text family and friends, you will also be unable to receive your One-Time Password (OTP), a common security feature in numerous social media sites, digital banking services, and online shopping apps linked to your account.
  • No internet access
    • Internet access has become vital in our increasingly digital society. Besides not being able to use your favorite apps and websites, not having Internet access also means being cut off from life-improving information and services.
  • No load balances
    • After your SIM card is deactivated, all your remaining load balances will be forfeited.
