The Competitive in 2023 for Legends of Runeterra (LoR) has been revealed by Riot Games, detailing the changes to the competitive play of the digital card game.
Riot Games revealed that the first competitive season of 2023 will be a beta season in which new tournaments and a path to the Legends of Runeterra World Championship (LoR Worlds) will be tested. Check out more details below.
The LoR beta season 2023 provides a preview of immediate changes and potential alterations that are underway. There will be more competitive opportunities for players to demonstrate their skills, and Ladder Rankings will no longer be required to qualify for major tournaments. Check out more details below.
Gauntlets/Tournaments
Gauntlets have often been a way to earn Prime Glory and train in the same manner as Seasonal Tournaments. Riot Games experimented with the Timewinder Gauntlets to determine how players would react to them, gaining some valuable insight. With that, Riot created Daily Rumbles and Runeterra Opens using those learnings.
Daily Rumble
With the addition of Daily Rumbles, the Gauntlet Structure has changed. For the Beta Season, you will play until you have accumulated six wins or three losses. The Daily Rumble will be a nightly tournament opening in the evening. The Daily Rumble can only be entered once per day.
Each week, the format of Daily Rumbles will change, allowing all types of players to satisfy their need for competition. Here is a sneak peek at the February release of the first rotation of Daily Rumbles.

Daily Rumble Buy-in
Riot Games desires Daily Rumbles to be more competitive and have greater stakes. As per Riot, to increase the stakes, the buy-in will be 650 Green Shards or 200 Coins. During the Beta Season, this price is drastically reduced so that players can participate more and truly test out the mode.
Daily Rumble Rewards

Runeterra Open
In Runeterra Opens, you play until you amass eight wins or three losses. Every month, two weeks after the update, there will be a Runeterra Open. It is available on Saturday and Sunday, and you will be able to play once during the weekend.
This is a large, no-entry-fee tournament in which anyone can participate. These will offer greater rewards and faster advancement along the Season Rewards Track than Daily Rumbles. They all also provide the most competitive players with more opportunities to train and compete for high stakes.
After Beta Season, the Runeterra Opens will feature a second layer of competition. Day One (Saturday) will remain unchanged from the Beta Season, but on Day Two (Sunday), players with qualifying scores will compete in a head-to-head tournament to determine a winner. After the Beta Season, Riot Games will adjust the rewards to reflect this increased level of competition.

World Qualifier Opens
As soon as competitive players finally leave Beta Season, every other Runeterra Open will be upgraded to a World Qualifier Open. If you win the World Qualifier Open, you are automatically qualified for Worlds (as opposed to Regional Qualifiers in the past).
Riot Games is not yet prepared to reveal exact reward structures, but once the Beta Season concludes, the company will be sure to provide more information.
LoR Worlds 2023
Riot has listened to the desire of many players to see AlanZQ at the 2022 Worlds Finals and wishes to officially announce that the 2022 World Finalists AragOrnn will qualify directly for the 2023 Worlds.
The old Seasonal Points and Ladder Points system of Riot Games is being replaced by Runeterra Points.
Runeterra Points are primarily earned through participation in Runeterra Opens, and World Qualifier Opens. Additionally, it is possible to earn a very small amount by participating in the Ladder. Riot Games will not be awarding Runeterra Points during the Beta Season (they will be adjusting the exact numbers to ensure they get it right), but they want to provide players with a high-level view of what to expect so they can provide the community with valuable feedback.
This year, Qualifying for Worlds will immediately place you on the international stage. Instead of each shard qualifying 64 players, a pool of global players will qualify directly for the world championship.
There are four ways to qualify for the LoR World Championship:
- Earn top-cut Runeterra Points, cumulative from the entire year
- Earn top-cut Runeterra Points from a specific Season
- Win a Select Runeterra Open
- Win a Last Chance Qualifier tournament (held leading up to Worlds)

Above is a visual mock-up of different ways to Qualify for Worlds 2023. LCQ Stands for "Last Chance Qualifier". This is how the system will ideally look after the Beta Season. According to Riot, they are still making adjustments and will post finalized Worlds plans at a later date.
