Watching anime shows is one of the favorite pastimes of Filipinos since most free-to-air Philippine TV networks include anime in their broadcast programming, whether morning or afternoon timeslot. Thus, the period between post-EDSA 1 (late 1980s) and the early 2000s was dubbed the "golden age of anime and tokusatsu," which was also a global phenomenon.
The 90s kids (born 1986-1996) will argue that they had access to high-quality anime and tokusatsu (live-action sci-fi) that resonates with them to this day. Whether you're a millennial, Gen Z, a hopeless romantic, or a mystery geek, watching Japanese animation series is an enjoyable experience.
Some of the hit anime series that Filipino millennials grew up watching are Inuyasha, Ghost Fighter, Ranma 1/2, Slam Dunk, Flame of Recca, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Dragon Ball, Hunter X Hunter, Samurai X, Cardcaptor Sakura, Fushigi Yuugi, Digimon, Pokemon, Doraemon, Bleach, One Piece, and Yu Gi Oh.
There also comes the old anime shows that succeeded in the Philippine free TV, including Voltes V, Daimos, Cedie Ang Munting Prinsipe, Sailor Moon, and Princess Sarah.
The free-to-air channels in the Philippines that broadcasted several anime series are GMA 7, the now-defunct ABS-CBN/Studio 23 (now blocktime w/ A2Z), TV5 (formerly ABC 5), GTV (formerly GMA News TV/QTV 11), IBC-13, RPN-9 (now CNN PH), and INC TV (GEM TV).
Due to the popularity of anime in the country, some networks have their own slogan for their anime block, such as GMA Astig Authority (previously known as GMA Anime Assault), TV5 AniMEGA (previously known as ABC 5 Animania), and Studio 23 Anime 'To. There's also GMA We Are Anime group founded by fans.
