New local servers for LoL PH bring lower ping, says Riot

Riot Games said that the new local servers they will deploy for League of Legends (LoL) Philippines will bring lower ping.

Since the launch of Riot servers for League of Legends (LoL) and Teamfight Tactics (TFT) throughout Southeast Asia in January 2023, Riot Games' teams have been continuously optimizing their technology and publishing operations to provide players with the best gaming experience possible.

According to Riot, they've heard players' feedback about less-than-desirable ping speeds on these new servers and have since doubled down on their investments in the region to get their infrastructure up to speed with what will feel and perform best as players chase those kill streaks on the Rift.

Here are the details revealed by Riot Games for the new local servers for LoL PH.

What is ping?

Ping, or latency, is the time required for a packet of data (a click or pressing Q) to travel from your computer to the game server and return. The unit of measurement for Ping is milliseconds (ms).

In online games such as League of Legends, latency determines the speed at which your computer communicates with the game servers. Also, it tells how quickly an action will occur after you press a key, click the mouse, or strike the dragon at the right time. The lower your ping, the quicker your communication, which is advantageous for you. Curious about your latency while playing League of Legends? Simply press "Ctrl + F" to toggle the ping display in the upper-right corner of the screen.

What is a good ping speed for gaming?

For League of Legends, Riot believes that 60ms or less is optimal. The rule will be different for other games. However, Riot wants to be ambitious and strive for the best possible experience so that players can enjoy a "faster and more seamless connection" while playing. Your high ping may be preventing you from becoming a Challenger.

What connectivity improvements are coming to LoL PH?

After launching the new Riot servers for League of Legends and TFT in the region, the average ping for the Philippines was 45ms to 50ms. Riot said that they recognize that "this hasn't been ideal," and they can't thank players enough for their feedback and patience while making all the necessary tweaks to enhance players' experience.

Riot added that they're "working hand in hand with local companies to install game servers in Manila for League and TFT," which will allow for average ping speeds of 15ms to 25ms for players in the Philippines. While major improvements can be expected across the country, some players in central Manila or NCR may even experience pings below 15ms.

When is this going to happen, and what do I need to do?

Riot said that their teams are "working hard to deploy the PH local servers and running all the required tests and checks."

Players can start to experience improvements in ping/latency from the middle of August onwards. Riot said that they "don't anticipate any server downtime, and there won't be any special steps that players have to take." The game company, however, noted that do keep sharing your feedback.

Further, Riot Games cited that they may have some plans to put the new local servers to the test. It advises players to follow their social media channels for more updates:
