Overwatch 2 Dev Update 2024: Hero Releases, Mythic Changes

Blizzard Entertainment announced major updates for Overwatch 2 in 2024, including hero releases, Mythics, and gameplay updates. Check out all the changes coming to the first-person hero shooter game below.

Hero Releases

Starting from Season 10 of Overwatch 2, all new heroes will be immediately unlocked when they launch. Additionally, all existing heroes will be unlocked for players. This means that heroes will no longer need to be unlocked via the Battle Pass to be playable in all game modes.

Note that new players must still complete the first-time user experience to unlock heroes as they familiarize themselves with the game. After unlocking the heroes from the original Overwatch roster, players will have access to all Overwatch 2 heroes.

Last year at BlizzCon, the developers gave a sneak peek at Overwatch 2's 40th hero, Venture, showcasing their unique underground mechanics and daring, adventurous spirit. The developers are excited to share that all players will have immediate access to Venture when they officially join the Overwatch 2 lineup in Season 10.

Mythic Changes

Overwatch 2 Developers want to provide players with more control over how they earn Mythic hero skins. Season 10 will introduce changes to how you earn, upgrade, and unlock Mythic hero skins via the new Mythic Shop.

The Mythic Shop will enable players to work towards past and current seasonal Mythic hero skins as they progress through the Premium Battle Pass. Players get to decide how far into each Mythic skin they would like to build. So, for example, if they don't want to fully unlock all of a skin's color or model variations, they can spread their progression towards other Mythic hero skins.

Moreover, Overwatch 2 developers are adding past Mythic hero skins to the Mythic Shop, giving players the opportunity to pick up their favorites. Seasonal Mythic hero skins will be available two seasons after their debut. This implies that Mythic hero skins from Seasons 1 through 7 will be available in the Mythic Shop starting Season 10.

According to Blizzard Entertainment, they will share more information on the Mythic Shop and additional changes to the Premium Battle Pass as Overwatch 2 approaches Season 10.

Challenges and Coins

Starting Season 10, players will earn coins as they progress through the Free and Premium tracks of the Battle Pass, making them easier and more consistent to earn. Further, Overwatch 2 devs are increasing the number of coins players can earn for free from 540 to 600 coins per season.

Moreover, weekly challenges will be more flexible to adapt your playstyle, and they will now reward Battle Pass XP.

Gameplay Updates

Beyond heroes and customization, the developers are also continuing to look at ways to refresh the core of Overwatch 2's gameplay.

Season 9 saw big changes to Competitive and core gameplay mechanics. In the long term, Blizzard's vision is to maintain a regular heartbeat in the game by consistently introducing new or updated systems, shaking up the meta, implementing rank resets, and introducing new rewards. The developers are also looking at how often this happens and listening closely to players' feedback.

Blizzard Entertainment said they are committed to making Overwatch 2 as fair, fun, and competitive as possible.

More Maps

Blizzard is excited to share plans on how they release and update maps.

The brand-new mode they introduced at BlizzCon 2023, Clash, will make its debut this year with two accompanying maps. Prepare for intense action in the limited-time Clash trial on the new Hanaoka map at the start of Season 10. The developers are excited to hear players' feedback.

Season 11 will introduce Runasapi, the new Push map set against the stunning backdrop of Peru in the world of Illari and the Inti Warriors. The developers are reworking some existing maps as well. Season 11 will also bring a reworked Colosseo.

According to Overwatch 2 developers, they've been listening to players' feedback on Dorado, Circuit Royale, Havana, and Numbani. They are working on significant updates for these maps. The game developers have urged players to provide their feedback on what other maps they would like the devs to look at in the future.

Overwatch 2 is evolving every season, and players' feedback is a massive part of that evolution. As the game approaches Season 10 and beyond, the team is committed to delivering a fun experience for everyone.

Stay tuned for an upcoming Developer Update closer to Season 10 that will cover competitive and Defense Matrix updates, as well as how the developers are addressing disruptive player behavior, grouping restrictions and competitive, and player anonymity.
