Satellite SMS trial of Globe, Lynk in PH successful

Globe reported that it held a successful end-to-end satellite SMS customer trial in a remote area with no signal reception in Zambales.

According to Globe, this is a milestone in the company's initiative to deliver connectivity in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).

The test used Lynk Global Inc.'s low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites to transmit text messages via Globe and TM SIMs on standard phones without modifications.

Moreover, the trial is a historic milestone, as it is the first time that regular mobile phones (prepaid and postpaid) connected directly to a satellite to send text messages, offering the potential for connectivity in areas away from cities.

Lynk's cutting-edge "cell tower in space" LEO satellites, which offer direct-to-standard-phone global connectivity in partnership with Globe, were employed in the live demonstration, which took place in a mobile blackspot in Lake Mapanuepe, Zambales.

The test, which utilized a variety of mobile devices, demonstrated that direct-to-phone satellite communication is feasible without the need for any modifications to existing devices, thereby enabling widespread accessibility and affordability.

The innovative accomplishment underscores Globe's commitment to enhancing coverage, particularly in rural and underserved regions where the construction of conventional cell towers continues to be a challenge.

Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe, said:
This is a significant step in our mission to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that every Filipino, regardless of location, stays connected to the world. By leveraging Lynk Global's low-earth orbit satellite technology, we are breaking barriers and bringing the next wave of solutions to the remotest areas, allowing families, travelers, and businesses to stay closer than ever.

Globe will conduct an additional trial in Mindanao this month, this time in a variety of scenarios, to further solidify its adoption of this innovative technology. In order to accommodate an increased number of GIDAs, the telco intends to integrate this technology into its network completely. Currently, Globe has a presence in more than 500 GIDAs throughout the nation.

Globe regularly pioneers new technology in the country. This client trial is just the start of the company's plan to include satellite-based communication into its services, solidifying its position as a Philippine technology leader.
