Globe Telecom said that its aggressive network expansion and ramped up 5G rollout continues to help improve the Philippines’ Digital Quality of Life (DQL).
The third annual DQL Index, conducted by virtual private network (VPN) service provider Surfshark, placed the Philippines 48th out of 110 countries surveyed in 2021, up from 66th last year. The Philippines came in 12th place out of 32 Asian countries, ahead of Indonesia (72nd), Vietnam (73rd), Laos (102nd), and Cambodia (108th).
Surfshark’s DQL Index covers internet quality, internet affordability, electronic security, electronic infrastructure, and electronic government. The Philippines ranked highly in terms of internet quality (20th overall) and electronic security (30th overall). Additionally, it was ranked first in the DQL survey for Mobile Speed Improvement and Broadband Speed Improvement.
To date, the telco has over 1,800 5G sites throughout the country, including the National Capital Region, Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo, Boracay, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and General Santos. Zamboanga will soon be enabled with 5G cell sites. Moreover, the telco is continuously rolling out 5G to more areas.
Apart from 5G, Globe is accelerating its site rollout. Globe had added 641 new towers and upgraded 8,175 mobile sites as of June 2021. Additionally, it has completed one million fiber lines in response to the continued growth in demand for fixed-line internet.
Globe stated that the company’s accelerated network rollouts utilizing 5G and fiber technologies are paying off. As of June 2021, average fixed broadband download speeds had nearly tripled to 66.55 Mbps from 25.34 Mbps in August 2020. In line with this, average mobile download speeds have doubled over the same period, increasing to 32.84 Mbps from 16.44 Mbps.
According to the report by Opensignal entitled “Benchmarking the 5G Experience — Asia Pacific — June 2021,” the Philippines’ average 5G download speed is now 141 Mbps, which is among the region’s fastest. The Philippines ranked 6th in terms of download speed and peak download speed in Asia-Pacific. Additionally, it was ranked 8th in 5G upload speed.
The increased performance and efficiency of 5G technology enable new user experiences and capabilities. It enables cutting-edge technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Edge Computing and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and immersive learning, to name a few. Additionally, it is anticipated to have a beneficial effect on various sectors, including manufacturing, transportation, logistics, healthcare, agriculture, and education.
“The significant jump in the country’s DQL rankings is welcome news and affirms Globe’s accelerated upgrading and expansion efforts to widen network coverage, boost connectivity speeds, and introduce first-world technologies,” said Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO.
