Globe Telecom supports the recent NTC action against the illegal sale of cell broadcaster, a device intended to serve the public during an extreme disaster.
Additionally, the telco warned the public against the sale and use of illegal signal boosters/repeaters, cellular signal blockers, and jammers that cause widespread interference with telecommunications services in a specific area. These network disruptions can manifest themselves in various ways, including slow or failed connections, dropped calls and poor voice quality, and even the loss of cell phone signals.
Illegal repeaters comprise indoor or outdoor antennas and wireless adapters that amplify network coverage and signal by utilizing bandwidth from a Globe cell site. As a result, such devices disrupt airwaves and mobile signals for other customers who live close to the booster and are served by the interfered cell site.
Since 2013, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has prohibited the sale of these illegal devices according to NTC Memorandum Order No. 01-02-2013 entitled “Prohibition of Portable Cellular Mobile Repeater and Portable Cell site Equipment.” Despite this, an increasing number of online retailers, sellers, and vendors are selling these illegal repeaters via social media.
The NTC is reviewing its previous memorandum (NTC MO 01-02-2013) against the sale of illegal repeaters in preparation for a possible update.
Globe searches for these illegal devices routinely and reports the results to the NTC for appropriate action.
