Genshin Impact removes 'Elon Musk Event' following fan backlash
Genshin Impact developer miHoYo has launched a community challenge in which the rewards included inviting Tesla CEO Elon Musk to their corporate headquarters in Shanghai. After few hours of posting, miHoYo removed its Twitter post for the event after fan backlash.
The supposed community challenge is to celebrate Genshin Impact’s Twitter account hitting two million followers. It is focused on an in-game character named Ella Musk, who has her own Twitter account and is obviously named after Elon Musk.
Here are the details of event milestones from Genshin Impact’s deleted tweet.
Follow Ella Musk @Paimon2themoon
When 500k fans follow, @GenshinImpact will be renamed back to Paimon
When 1M fans follow, @GenshinImpact will follow @elonmusk
When 3M fans follow, @GenshinImpact will invite @elonmusk to stream Genshin Impact
When 5M fans follow, CEO Dawei will invite Elon Musk to visit miHoYo HQ
Usually, Genshin Impact’s community challenges reward players with in-game prizes. With this Elon Musk event, most responses from the community were overwhelmingly negative.
On the other hand, Genshin Impact’s community challenge caught the attention of Musk, and he responded.
“Can’t wait to be in Genshin Impact,” said Elon Musk in a Twitter post.
Elon Musk seems to believe that this contest was intended to involve him in the game somehow, albeit that was never guaranteed.
For the uninitiated, Genshin Impact is a cross-platform action RPG set in an anime-style open-world environment. The free-to-play game features an action-based battle system and gacha game mechanics.
