Hanoi SEA Games slated for May 2022
The regional multi-sport event 31st Southeast Asia (SEA) Games has been rescheduled for mid-May 2022.
Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham Tolentino announced the news on Monday, following an online SEA Games Federation meeting of member countries.
According to Tolentino, Vietnam organizers agreed to a mid-May start date for the SEA Games, adding that he proposed starting the sporting event on May 12.
The Hanoi SEA Games were initially scheduled from November 21 until December 2. However, due to the ongoing risk surrounding the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Vietnam made the difficult decision to postpone it to a later date.
“The Vietnamese organizers will confirm the specific dates soon,” said POC President Tolentino as reported by ABS-CBN News.
The 31st Southeast Asian Games will include 40 sports consisting of 520 events. 626 Pinoy athletes are set to compete across 39 events. Moreover, this will be the second time SEAG competition will include the Esports category.
In 2019, the Philippines dominated the SEA Games, hosting 530 events across 54 sports. In the inaugural esports medal event, the country bagged three gold medals from Dota 2, StarCraft II, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.
