Heroes of Newerth, launched in 2010 by developer S2 Games, is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game heavily inspired by the original Dota, or Defense of the Ancients, a custom map developed in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.
In 2015, it passed the development duties to Frostburn Studios. The same year also Garena acquired the publishing rights for Heroes of Newerth for the Southeast Asian region. Known as HoN in the Philippines, it is one of the commonly played PC games in the country.
Many Dota 2 players had their roots in competitive Heroes of Newerth, including two-time TI champ N0tail and other pros like iNsania, Kyle, KheZu, ppd, and zai.
