Riot Games has revealed the roadmap for Wild Rift Esports during its Season 2022 live stream.
The first official season for LoL Wild Rift is starting soon, with eight regional leagues worldwide. Tencent-led Riot Games said these regions will have their own “unique flavor and style,” implying that they may take on a different format from the one used in 2021. The Season 1 of Wild Rift Esports will run from January to May 2022. These include the following:
- Wild Tour Brasil – January 13, 2022
- Wild Rift Champions SEA – January 22, 2022
- Wild Rift Open Latinoamerica – January 28, 2022
- Wild Rift EMEA Championship – February 5, 2022
- Wild Rift Champions Korea – February 14, 2022
- Wild Rift North America Series – February 2022
- Wild Rift Japan Cup – February 2022
- Wild Rift League – March 2022
The Wild Rift Champions SEA (WCS), the regional league for Southeast Asia, will feature six competitive sub-regions, including Hong Kong & Taiwan, Malaysia & Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Open qualifiers registration is now open until January 15, and participants must meet the following requirements:
- A team must have at least six (6) players.
- A team must have a minimum of three (3) sub-region resident players and a maximum of two (2) imports.
- Each player must be seventeen (17) years of age or older at the time of registration.
The open qualifiers Wild Rift Champions SEA will be played in a Swiss Bracket format. Each team will compete in seven rounds of best-of-three matches and will be eliminated if they suffer three-match losses. The top eight (8) squads will advance to the knockout stage, where they will fight in a double-elimination bracket to earn a regular-season berth.
The regular season begins on February 25 and runs for five weeks, concluding on March 27, in a double round-robin format. Eight teams – including those who qualified through the open qualifiers and those that were invited directly – will face off twice in best-of-three matches against each other. The top six teams will then continue to the WCS Playoffs, which will take place from April 1 through April 10.
Additionally, Riot Games stated that the game’s first official global competition will take place this summer in Europe. The Wild Rift Global Championship Icons will be an offline tournament in which a world champion will be crowned.
This biggest tournament for Wild Rift will feature 24 teams from the regional leagues, with 8 directly qualifying for the main event and 16 squads battling through the play-in stage. The tournament’s main event will include a group stage, knockouts, and the grand finals.
To recall, Riot announced esports for Wild Rift in mid-2021 in response to community demand. It culminated in Singapore with the Horizon Cup, in which ten teams battled for a share of USD 500,000. China’s Da Kun Gaming (DKG) defeated ThunderTalk Gaming to claim the title in the finals. Meanwhile, the Philippines’ Team Secret settled for 3rd-4th place finish after losing to DKG in the semifinals and bagged USD 60,000 in consolation.
