Globe has blocked a total of 142,575 smishing messages from February to March of this year, with its proactive filter system recognizing these fraudulent messages in its network.
The telco continues to improve its security tools and platforms in order to detect and block illegal SMS and web blaster devices more effectively. Globe employees, customers, and partners have now been provided with reporting channels and systems to promptly record and share information concerning fraud and scams.
Globe provided the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) with a framework of collaboration in March 2022 that aims to create the sharing of data and information for fraud detection and prevention between Globe and BAP member banks. Globe and Unionbank first signed a Memorandum of Understanding on March 25, 2022.
Over the past few years, Globe has made Internet safety and cybersecurity programs a top priority. In 2021, the company blocked 1.15 billion scam/spam messages, around 7,000 cellphone numbers associated with scammers, and 2,000 unauthorized social media accounts and phishing sites.
Globe chief information security officer Anton Bonifacio said that “smishing occurs mainly through mobile text messaging, in which scammers attempt to mislead victims into giving away their personal data.” He added that “scammers then use this data to take over a victim’s financial accounts.”
Bonifacio said Globe is working with the government and industry stakeholders, particularly on threat intelligence sharing initiatives, as well as on awareness campaigns via SMS, website, and social media channels.
Bonifacio once more urged customers to report scam emails via Globe’s spam reporting website (https://ift.tt/Lknxc9S). The form is also accessible via the GlobeOne mobile app, Globe’s Facebook Messenger, and other agent-assisted channels.
Moreover, Android phone users may set up spam filters on their Android devices by downloading the “Messages” app of Google as their default Android SMS messenger. This messaging app includes a Spam Protection setting which can be enabled to block unwanted or unsolicited messages.
