The popular South Korean webtoon “Solo Leveling” is getting an anime adaptation, as announced during Crunchyroll’s Anime Expo 2022 Industry Panel.
Along with the announcement, publisher D&C Webtoon has released a 2-minute video trailer, showing stills from the web-comic as well as the team that will work for the animation.
The action-fantasy anime series will be co-produced by Kakao Entertainment and studio A-1 Pictures, the company behind famous anime titles such as “Sword Art Online,” “Your Lie in April,” “Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day,” “Kaguya-sama: Love Is War,” “Erased,” and “The Seven Deadly Sins.”
The anime series will be directed by Shunsuke Nakashige, who is also recognized for his work on Mother of the Goddess’ Dormitory. Noboru Kimura will compose the film’s screenplay. Hiroyuki Sawano (who also worked on Attack on Titan) is composing the music for the anime adaptation, while Tomoko Sudo will be responsible for character design.
For the uninitiated, “Solo Leveling” is a web novel written by Chugong that was first serialized in 2016. The webtoon adaptation was serialized on the content platform KakaoPage in 2018. The web-comic concluded in December 2021 with 179 chapters.
The story revolves around a hunter named Sung Jinwoo as he fights for survival in a world invaded by monsters. He gains the rare ability to level up in strength indefinitely after being chosen by the program known as the System.
Solo Leveling anime is set to release sometime in 2023 on the Crunchyroll platform.
