Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a, a spin-off anime series, is set to release in January 2023, as announced during the Aniplex Online Fest.
Two trailers for the adaptation of 2B and 9S, two of the android protagonists of Nier Automata who serve as soldiers in the elite military force YoRHa against an invasion of alien robots on behalf of humanity, were unveiled during the event.
Yui Ishikawa and Natsuki Hanae, who provided the voices for 2B and 9S, respectively, in the original 2017 game, will reprise their roles in the anime, according to both video trailers.
The TV anime series will be produced by A-1 Pictures, the studio responsible for such anime as Sword Art Online and Kaguya-Sama: Love is War, and directed by Ryouji Masuyama, who has directed Blend S and Gurren Lagann Parallel Works, among others.
Despite Aniplex's hopes for a faithful adaptation of the game, creator Yoko Taro revealed that the anime's story would diverge from the game's due to the differences between storytelling in games and traditional media.
"The title 'NieR: Automata' was a story we created to be a game, so copying it as-is would not make an interesting story for an anime," noted Taro. "So I brought up the idea of changing things around."
To recall, the official confirmation of the Nier Automata anime occurred in February 2022. It will feature the protagonists from Nier Automata, 2B and 9S.
Sci-fi action RPG title "Nier: Automata," which was developed by Platinum Games and published by Square Enix, was released in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PC platforms, followed by an Xbox One release in 2018. It occurs in the "Nier" universe, which is a spin-off of the "Drakengard" franchise. The game features open-world environments, multiple unlockable characters, melee and ranged weapons, as well as intense action.
