GCash bolsters security efforts vs scams, moves SMS to App Inbox

Globe-led financial app GCash has revealed that it enhanced its security measures against scams. It started migrating transaction confirmation messages to the in-app inbox and removing clickable links in all emails and text messages to users.

According to GCash, the said move is in line with their efforts to combat scammers and fraudsters.

Here's GCash's schedule of migrating transaction confirmation messages to the app inbox:
  • October 5, 2022 – "SEND MONEY" confirmation SMS
  • October 12, 2022 – "BUY LOAD" and "BANK TRANSFER" transactions

Additionally, these messages will be available in the "Transactions" button on the GCash app.

These changes were disseminated to customers via official text messages and in-app reminders.

GCash noted that the removal of clickable links on SMS and emails comes on the heels of the NTC's order to block Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) or links in text messages which are seen as a major deterrent against scammers.

Meanwhile, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) urged its regulated financial institutions to take a number of measures to combat cyber fraud and other attacks against financial services.
