Globe blocks 2.7-B spam, scam SMS in 2022, more than 2X vs 2021

Globe reported that it blocked a record-breaking 2.7 billion scam and spam messages in 2022, more than double the 1.15 billion it blocked in 2021, as a result of its intensified campaign against malicious SMS.

Globe also blocked 83.4 million bank-related spam messages last year as a result of its intensified crackdown on fraudsters. Globe has partnered with all of the country's largest commercial banks and online retailers to facilitate the exchange of information for a more effective response to spam and fraud SMS.

Globe's cybersecurity strategy continues to emphasize the blocking of spam and phishing messages, and the company was able to protect its customers from dangerous and disruptive SMS before the implementation of the SIM Registration Act.

Anton Bonifacio, Globe's chief information security officer, said that their customers are their top priority, so they do their best to ensure that they are protected from scammers and fraudsters. He added that they would "continue to invest in cybersecurity systems and work tirelessly to provide them with a safe and enjoyable online experience" as the telco also take part in the full implementation of the SIM Registration Act.

"With our relentless proactive blocking efforts and implementation of the new [SIM registration] law, we are taking great strides in our campaign to end text fraud," added Bonifacio.

Globe has invested approximately USD 20 million to improve its SMS spam detection and blocking system. Its Security Operations Center filters out unwanted messages, including app-to-person and person-to-person SMS from international and domestic sources, around the clock.

Globe began blocking person-to-person SMS with clickable URLs from all networks in September of last year, a first for the industry, in response to escalating scam and spam messages, particularly those containing the full names of mobile users.

Globe blocked over 32.2 million scam and spam text messages with clickable links, or an average of 2.4 million SMS per day from September 28 to October 13, 2022, just two weeks after implementing an unprecedented measure.

In response to the rise in SMS-related crimes, the government passed the SIM (subscriber identity module) Registration Act (Republic Act No. 11934) last year. Individuals are required by law to register their SIM and present a valid ID card to their respective service providers.
