Smart is still the fastest and best mobile network in the Philippines, according to internet analytics firm Ookla.
To recall, Smart Communications, PLDT's wireless arm, was awarded by Ookla the Best Mobile Network for Q1 to Q2 2022. This made the telco the first and only Philippine mobile operator to earn this rare and prestigious citation. After making this achievement, Smart set another record by winning the award for the Q3-Q4 2022 reporting period.
To secure the Best Mobile Network for Q3 to Q4 2022, Smart won both the Fastest Mobile Network and Best Mobile Coverage awards from Ookla during the same reporting periods.
Ookla's latest report revealed that Smart is ahead of its competitors like Globe and DITO in terms of Speed and Coverage Scores.
The telco received the "Fastest Mobile Network" award with a Speed Score of 62.30, posting a median download speed of 31.04 Mbps and a median upload speed of 6.80 Mbps. Meanwhile, its closest competitor posted a Speed Score of 36.36, logging median download and upload speeds of 20.22 Mbps and 5.13 Mbps, respectively. This award is based on more than 2.9 million user-initiated tests.
Moreover, Smart bagged the "Best Mobile Coverage" award with a Coverage Score of 795. Of the scans from Smart subscribers, Ookla revealed that 98.80 percent had service, and 91.40 percent had 4G service. Meanwhile, its closest rival recorded a Coverage Score of 757. This award is based on over 3.4 million scan counts.
Ookla cited that the Coverage Score captures both the number of locations in which a mobile operator offers service (its footprint) and the quality of service in each location.
Further, Ookla's report showed that Smart was faster than its competitors in major cities all over the country. In Quezon City, Cebu City, and Davao City, Smart was the Fastest Mobile Network.
As of end-September 2022, Smart had set up 77,200 base stations across the country. This included 7,300 5G base stations and close to 40,000 4G/LTE base stations. It is backed by the largest fiber network in the country, covering more than 1.09 million kilometers of international and domestic fiber.
