SIM registration extended until July 25, 2023 –DOJ

The deadline for SIM registration was extended until July 25, 2023, additional 90 days from the original April 26 deadline, DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla announced Tuesday.

"There's a 90-day extension," said Justice Secretary Remulla before the start of the fourth inter-agency meeting about the Oriental Mindoro oil spill.

Remulla said that services that come with unregistered cellphones would be cut off by the telcos. Likewise, those who fail to register their SIMs will not have access to social media.

Major telcos Globe, Smart, and DITO have yet to issue a statement regarding the 90-day SIM card registration deadline extension.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has not made any announcement on the matter yet, but they disclosed on Monday that the possibility of extending the SIM registration deadline was discussed in its Stakeholders Meeting on SIM Registration Act Implementation.

The SIM Registration Act mandated that all SIM cards in the Philippines be registered by April 26 in an effort to eliminate SMS-based fraud. However, the country's largest telecommunications companies noted the low registration rate and requested an extension, citing a lack of government-issued IDs and digital literacy as hurdles.

DITO, Globe, and Smart have asked for an extension of the deadline in order to facilitate all of their subscribers who have not yet met the SIM registration requirements.

On Saturday, April 22, the DICT reported that less than 60 percent of the 168 million active SIMs in the Philippines had been registered.
