A study showed that it takes almost 80 days of work for the average Filipino to afford the latest iPhone.
Apple recently announced the iPhone 15 series (iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max), which has become a hot topic among tech-savvy consumers, Apple enthusiasts, and Filipino fans of the brand.
With that, online couponing platform Picodi made an iPhone Index report, presenting the number of man-days required in order to be able to purchase Apple's newest smartphone in various countries around the world, including the Philippines.
Specifically, Picodi juxtaposed the local iPhone 15 Pro (128 GB) prices with average earnings and calculated the iPhone Index, which is the price of the phone expressed in man-days.
Here are the highlights of the latest report:
- The newest iPhone 15 Pro (128 GB) was priced at PHP 70,990, the same as last year;
- An average Filipino has to work for 79.5 days in order to afford Apple's latest phone;
- This is 11.4 days less than last year (90.9 days in 2022);
- Citizens of Switzerland can earn money for the newest phone in the shortest amount of time (4.2 days);
- Türkiye ranked in the last place of the ranking with 123.7 days (followed by the Philippines and Brazil with 79.5 and 66.6 days, respectively).
According to Picodi Philippines' analysis, an average Filipino would have to work for 79.5 days to buy the iPhone 15 Pro (128GB), the base version of the flagship.
This report assumes that the average monthly wage in the Philippines is PHP 18,744.39, and the price of the iPhone 15 Pro (128GB storage variant) is PHP 70,990.
According to Picodi's iPhone Index 2023, the Philippines ranks second in the number of working days required to purchase the device.
Picodi reported a decrease in the number of working days in the Philippines by 11.4 days compared to last year's iPhone Index report.
This is how the iPhone Index has changed in the Philippines over the past six years:
- 2018 – 156.6 days
- 2019 – 96.2 days
- 2020 – 88.2 days
- 2021 – 90.2 days
- 2022 – 90.9 days
- 2023 – 79.5 days
The newest iPhone requires 123.7 days of work in Turkey, the longest among all countries. Brazil has been ranked as the third worst country in terms of average number of man-days worked, with a total of 66.6 days recorded.
Meanwhile, Switzerland tops the list as the country where someone can afford a new iPhone in the shortest amount of time. The average Swiss needs only 4.2 man-days, while the average American needs 5.3 days, and the average Australian needs 6.3 days.
