LoL Esports in 2024: Competitive Changes, Event Updates

Riot Games has shared the latest updates for League of Legends Season 2024, the 14th season for LoL Esports. Among these are competitive changes and event updates. Check out more details below.

Global Competitive Changes

According to Riot Games, its aim is to intensify the level of competition in its international events.

In 2023, they brought about changes in the format of both MSI and Worlds by eliminating matches that were not crucial to the outcome of the tournament.

For 2024, they plan to enhance the stakes around MSI further and establish a stronger link between MSI and Worlds.

Further, Riot Games has announced that for this season, they will be allocating 3 Worlds slots each to the LEC, LCS, LCK, and LPL. The PCS and VCS will both retain two Worlds slots, while the LLA and CBLOL will each retain one Worlds slot. To encourage teams and regions to demonstrate their strength and earn additional Worlds slots, Riot Games will introduce new methods at MSI.

Starting this year, the winner of the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) tournament will receive an automatic qualifying spot for their region at the League of Legends World Championship. This will create an additional slot for their region to compete at Worlds. Additionally, the second-best performing region at MSI will earn an extra seed for their region at the World Championship.

In order to keep the team motivated and focused on winning their local league, the team that secures an early qualification for the Worlds must also qualify for their region's Summer Playoffs. However, in the case of the LEC, the team must qualify for the LEC Regional Finals instead of the Summer Playoffs.

If we take the example of MSI 2023, JDG would automatically qualify for Worlds, which means that a total of 4 LPL teams would be able to qualify for the event. In addition, the region with the next best performance, which in this case is the LCK, would be granted an extra seed for Worlds 2023, bringing the total number of seeds to 4.

According to Riot Games, they are hopeful that these adjustments will up the stakes and establish a meaningful throughline between the two tentpole moments across the LoL Esports season: MSI and Worlds.

MSI and Worlds 2024 Locations

MSI 2024 will take place in Chengdu, China from May 1-19. This marks the first global LoL Esports event in this vibrant city. Stay tuned for updates on schedules, tickets, and more.

In South Korea last year, Riot announced that the 2024 edition of Worlds would be held in Europe, with the finals taking place in London at the famous O2 Arena. Today, Riot is ready to reveal the venues for the other stages of the tournament.

Riot Games will be starting the LoL Worlds tournament in Berlin at the newly renovated Riot Games Arena for the Play-Ins and Swiss Stages. Then, they will move to the Adidas Arena in Paris, France, for the Quarterfinals and Semifinals.

The upcoming Worlds 2024 event has been scheduled to run from September 25 to November 2. Riot Games is committed to sharing regular updates throughout the year, providing the community with insights into the latest developments.

Hall of Legends

As we approach the 2024 season, Riot Games is proud to commemorate 14 incredible years of LoL Esports. During this decade-long period, pro players from all over the world have left their mark, exhibiting incredible resilience, mastery of League of Legends gameplay, and inspiring millions of fans across the world. To honor those who have made a lasting impact on the game, the sport, and the community while simultaneously paying tribute to their legacies, Riot Games is proud to introduce the LoL Esports Hall of Legends.

League of Legends has a unique version of a Hall of Fame, and there are several pro players who deserve to be inducted into it. To ensure a fair selection process, Riot Games assembled an independent voting panel of esports industry veterans and experts from every region. This panel is responsible for selecting the very first inductee into the League of Legends Hall of Fame.

Each year, the Hall of Legends inductees will have their historic careers celebrated both in real life and in-game. Currently, Riot Games is collecting votes and will be sharing more information in the upcoming months, so stay tuned.
