Globe debuts hybrid solar power in 26 cell sites

Globe Telecom has completed its pilot run of hybrid solar gensets in its 26 cell sites, enabling greener operations and significant savings.

According to Globe, this milestone aligns with their "firm commitment to sustainability and its goal to achieve Net Zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions by 2050."

The program, which was implemented between 2022 and 2023, centered on the integration of hybrid solar energy systems at 26 Globe sites, including six (6) in Mindanao, seventeen (17) in South Luzon, and three (3) in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The sites incorporate off-grid towers that were previously powered by diesel gensets (generator sets) but are now capable of operating entirely on renewable energy or a combination of renewables and diesel fuel via a battery energy storage system. Additionally, the technology was evaluated in good-grid tower sites that incorporate a combination of coal and renewable energy sources sourced from the power grid, as well as in bad-grid tower sites that encounter frequent power disruptions.

Globe said it saved about 119,000 liters of diesel fuel and 67,000 kWh of energy, saving PHP 6.9 million. These numbers demonstrate the program's environmental impact reduction and sustainable energy solutions' cost savings and efficiency gains.

Joel Agustin, Globe Network Planning and Engineering Head, said:
Successfully implementing hybrid solar power across multiple sites represents a big leap in our efforts to decarbonize our operations. Beyond demonstrating our dedication to environmental stewardship, it also cements Globe's status as the Most Sustainability-Driven Network Operator in the Philippines.

Globe's cell sites were powered by electricity from the national power grid, which is primarily generated from coal, along with conventional diesel gensets for backup power. However, the transition to sustainable sources became a necessity, particularly for locations lacking access to a commercial power grid or experiencing unreliable grid conditions. They usually depended on conventional gensets that ran nonstop.

The hybrid solar power solution from Globe includes a range of innovative features. It features a Solar Mini-Grid that can be constructed either within the facility or in the surrounding area, providing flexible capacity and adaptability. This system is perfect for deployment in challenging terrains as it provides direct power to on-site equipment.

As per Globe, the solution features an Advanced Solar Hybrid system, a smart off-grid power solution that primarily relies on solar energy. It seamlessly switches to the rectifier battery system and diesel genset when necessary.

Globe Telecom will gradually implement its hybrid solar power technology throughout its cell sites. Green solutions and improvements are being pursued to lower its network's GHG and carbon impact. Globe's dedication to environmental sustainability and corporate citizenship underpins this approach.
