T1 beat TES to win LoL title at Esports World Cup 2024

T1, Korea's powerhouse League of Legends (LoL) team, defeated China's Top Esports to secure the LoL title at the inaugural Esports World Cup 2024.

The best-of-five grand finals took place at the Qiddiya Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where T1 won by a score of 3-1 over the powerful Top Esports (TES).

With their win, T1 took home the largest share of USD 400,000 (around PHP 23 million) out of the tournament's massive USD 1,000,000 prize pool. TES had to settle for a second-place finish, bagging USD 200,000 (roughly PHP 11.7 million) in consolation. Meanwhile, T1 earned 1,000 points in the Esports World Cup campaign, while runners-up TES garnered 600 points.

T1's long-time mid-laner Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok led the team to victory. He was named MVP for his excellent play in the elimination rounds and finals. His surprise pick of Yasuo in the last set against TES was decisive, showing his skill and versatility despite wrist concerns.

Prior to the grand finals, the South Korean LoL teams had to storm through formidable squads. In the quarterfinals, T1 vanquished the Chinese team Bilibili Gaming, and in the semifinals, they eliminated Team Liquid, both by a score of 2-1.

In its inaugural year, the Esports World Cup replaced the Gamers8 tournament. Over the course of two months, it will host tournaments with million-dollar prize pools for twenty-one distinct games.

To recall, T1 won the League of Legends World Championship 2023, marking Faker's fourth title for LoL Worlds.
