Globe says political SMS with its sender ID is a case of spoofing

Globe has received reports from its users that the telco's sender ID has been used to spread a malicious text message targeting the President's family or other well-known political figures.

Globe said in an advisory:
Watch out for spoofed text messages! Globe never sends messages of [a] political nature. Be wary of suspicious text messages and never engage with its senders.

Globe Telecom noted that the recently circulated text message is a case of spoofing, in which fraudsters send unauthorized text messages with a spoofed sender ID to mobile phone users in a specific area using fake cell towers.

Spoofing is accomplished through the use of an international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) catcher, a portable device that captures mobile users within a small area by causing their signal to switch to 2G/EDGE, the outdated cellular network technology for voice calls and messages. SMS messages sent through spoofing don't go through Globe's cell network, so they bypass the telco's strict anti-fraud filters.

According to Globe, they are investigating this latest spoofing incident and are working with relevant authorities and other partners to prevent a recurrence.

Moreover, the telco company would like to remind its customers, both Globe and TM, to be wary of suspicious text messages they receive and never engage with its senders.

Globe, as a mobile network operator, will not send political messages and has no political ties. It focuses on working with the government to reach shared goals, such as providing inclusive connectivity and building a thriving, digitally-enabled Filipino nation.
