Sky Mavis has announced that the new Axie Infinity 1.1.0a update will no longer allow accounts under 800 MMR to earn smooth love potions (SLP) from adventure, arena, and daily quest. The latest patch also brings improvements to the game’s performance.
According to Sky Mavis, the Vietnam-based developer behind the blockchain-powered NFT game “Axie Infinity,” the latest update will prevent players with a matchmaking ranking (MMR) below 800 from earning SLP in any of the game’s modes.
This update was implemented to discourage players from abusing the MMR system to obtain easy wins in Arena. The goal is to keep Arena as competitive as possible, hoping that players will participate in the competition more than the prizes. The decision, however, impacts new and low-ranking players, as well as those that are adventure mode-focused players.
Moreover, the Axie Infinity update 1.1.0a brings changes to the trading token-based digital pets called Axies. With the new patch, Axies will reset to level 1 when they change owners. This keeps players from swapping Axies for breeding purposes and then returning them without first syncing the axies on Axie Infinity. Thus, it significantly complicates collaborative breeding.
Other highlights of Axie Infinity update 1.1.0a include:
- The new update allows players to invite their friends to battle.
- Temporarily, match history will not be saved on the game’s servers and will be accessible only through the client device.
- The developers made a minor change to the way some addresses are displayed in the Ronin Block Explorer.
This update developed after SLP’s price plummeted from USD 0.35 in mid-July to around USD 0.076 as of this writing. Despite subsequent tweaks to the game’s economy, prices have not returned. The decline has generated concerns about the game’s long-term viability among users, particularly those lured by the game’s play-to-earn model.
In an October 2021 report, Axie Infinity has reached 2 million daily active users. It is also now on the top 500 most popular websites globally, according to Amazon’s Alexa ranking.
