Valve-owned Steam has updated its rules and guidelines, revealing that the platform has banned games developed on blockchain technology or allow for NFT and cryptocurrency trading.
Steam has updated its onboarding page for partners and Steamworks users to include a statement from Valve stating that the platform will soon prohibit NFT trading games.
The new rule stating that “applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs,” is added under the heading “what you shouldn’t publish on Steam.”
SpacePirate Games, the developers of the blockchain sci-fi game “Age of Rust,” confirmed the change, stating that they were notified about the new prohibition.
In an excerpt from the official Age of Rust Twitter account’s post, “Steam will be kicking all blockchain games off the platform, including Age of Rust.”
Moreover, SpacePirate Games adds that in their opinion, “Steam’s point of view is that items have value and they don’t allow items that can have real-world value on their platform.”
Currently, various games on Steam incorporate NFT and cryptocurrency into their gameplay. Among them is the cross-platform MMORPG “MIR4,” which allows players to earn cryptocurrency in the form of “Draco,” which can be minted by playing the game. Players need to mine “Darksteel” inside the game, then smelt it to obtain Draco.
On the other hand, Epic Games showed its favor for NFTs and blockchain games.
Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, tweeted in response to The Verge’s story about his company’s interest in allowing NFT technology on its storefront.
“Epic Games Store will welcome games that make use of blockchain tech provided they follow the relevant laws, disclose their terms, and are age-rated by an appropriate group,” said Sweeney in a Twitter post.
