Facebook October 4th outage caused by maintenance error
Facebook said that the recent outage of its lineup of products, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Oculus VR, was caused by a configuration change to its routers — not a hack or any other malicious activities.
It was followed by a blog post detailing that the outage was due to a routine maintenance error that basically disconnected Facebook’s data centers from the internet.
Following this event, CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted an apology, saying the platforms were coming back online.
The outage began at around noon Eastern time (1600 GMT) on October 4, 2021 (around midnight Philippine time on October 5).
The issues then spread to the servers that advertise Facebook’s DNS and BGP information. This failure obliterated the DNS routing information required by Facebook for other networks to find its sites.
The outage disabled tools that engineers typically use to investigate and resolve problems complicating the work even further.
Due to the high level of physical and system protection, it took the company additional time to get engineers inside to work on the servers.
Facebook services were restored roughly six hours after it went down.
