Globe Telecom sees that mobile data use in the Philippines will continue to surge in 2022, even as pandemic restrictions ease.
Head of Globe Consumer Mobile Business, Darius Delgado, said that the telco registered “encouraging growth in data traffic in 2021” and expects this to continue in 2022 as more people return to work, school, and leisure.
According to the 2022 report on the global mobile landscape of unified data AI platform Data.ai (formerly App Annie), the Philippines was among the top mobile markets in 2021, registering growth in mobile downloads and hours of mobile data consumption.
The country ranked 10th globally in Google Play and iOS downloads, recording 25 percent growth between 2020 and 2021. The number of time users spent on mobile through Android also increased to upwards of 100 billion hours from 90 billion in 2020 and roughly 65 billion in 2019.
Moreover, Data.ai cited how the global mobile ecosystem got “healthier than ever” in 2021, with the release of 2 million new mobile apps and games boosting user engagement.
This has been evident since the end of 2021, when Globe reported a 48 percent year-on-year increase in mobile data traffic to 3,733 petabytes, up from 2,517 petabytes in 2020.
Globe also announced record mobile data revenues of PHP 77.8 billion by the end of 2021, up from PHP 72.4 billion in 2020, owing to the pandemic’s connectivity demands. Globe mobile data accounted for 75 percent of total mobile revenue in 2021, up from 70% in 2020.
