Blizzard Entertainment has announced an early access release date for Overwatch 2, the sequel to the original Overwatch.
The team-based hero shooter will be a free-to-play game for Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch consoles on October 4, 2022.
This release will contain “dynamic new PVP content,” featuring a new five-versus-five multiplayer format with cross-platform play and cross-platform progression. Along with it, there are major game updates such as new heroes, hero reworks, maps, modes, and premium cosmetics.
At launch, Overwatch 2 will include a new tank hero, the Junker Queen. She is the second new hero announced for Overwatch 2 and the franchise’s 34th hero, following Sojourn, a former Overwatch captain with cybernetic skills and excellent mobility who wields a railgun.
Activision Blizzard will reveal more details about Junker Queen during an Overwatch 2 Reveal Event on June 16 at 10:00 am PDT (June 17 at 01:00 am GMT+8).
New and famous international locations, such as the icy New Queen Street in Toronto and the bustling Midtown Manhattan, will be added to the game at launch.
Moreover, Overwatch 2 introduces the new Push game mode, a symmetrical map type in which teams compete to control a centrally-located robot and advance it farther into enemy territory than the opposing team.
Blizzard Entertainment president Mike Ybarra shared that “this is the beginning of an always-on and always-evolving era for the franchise” as well as “a recommitment to serving players with frequent and substantial updates planned well into the future to keep Overwatch 2 fresh and fun for many years to come.”
