DICT rejects telcos' call for SIM registration deadline extension

There's no extension for the SIM registration deadline, DICT announced. Existing users must register their SIMs before April 26, 2023.

The announcement was made on the official Facebook page of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). Here's the full statement.

DICT Statement on the Request of Public Telecommunication Entities for SIM Registration Period Extension.

The DICT issued the announcement on Wednesday after receiving requests to extend the SIM registration deadline from major telcos Globe and Smart.

As of April 17, 2023, only 43.47 percent, or 73,033,833, of the total 168 million mobile subscribers nationwide had registered their SIM cards.

The aggregate data from DICT showed that Smart Communications registered 36,115,938, Globe Telecom recorded 31,585,578, and DITO Telecommunity logged 5,332,317.

Despite requests from telcos and less than 50 percent of the total subscriber base being registered, the DICT stated that "at this point, there is no extension of SIM registration."

The agency said that with the April 26, 2023 registration deadline coming closer, they encourage everyone to register their SIMs.

The DICT also reminded the public that failure to register their SIMs will result in automatic deactivation, preventing them from using mobile services, such as receiving and sending calls and text messages, and accessing mobile apps and digital wallets.

Deactivated SIMs have a 5-day grace period in order to be registered and get reactivated.

The SIM Card Registration Act, enacted into law in October 2022, gives SIM card owners 180 days from the law's effective date, or until April 26, 2023, to register their mobile numbers.

The law also allows the DICT to extend the deadline by an additional 120 days if deemed necessary.
