Globe SIM registrations hit over 1M/day as deadline nears

Globe Telecom revealed that they're hitting over a million registrations as the SIM registration deadline draws near.

Globe reported earlier that they opted to use the Emergency Cell Broadcast System (ECBS) to urgently alert subscribers who have yet to comply with the SIM Registration Act.

According to the telco, they took this action because registrations in March averaged only about 200,000 per day. Globe began using ECBS to contact unregistered users due to the low daily registration numbers. The impact of ECBS has been enormous, as daily registrations have increased from 400K to 800K in the past week. The number of daily registrations surpassed 1 million over the weekend.

Globe Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer Yoly Crisanto said:
We are looking after our customers as we do not want their SIMs deactivated. If they do not register by April 26, customers stand to lose their mobile services, now considered a lifeline, especially post-pandemic. We apologize to our registered customers who have received the emergency alerts and expressed their irritation online. These messages were really intended for those who have not registered. We appeal for their understanding as these messages are geographically targeted for all. Globe sees the low registration numbers as needing urgent public service because the lack of mobile services is in itself an emergency, severely impacting daily life, from financial transactions and e-commerce to transport and education, among many others.

Wednesday, April 26, is the deadline for SIM registration, and telcos have requested an extension. The Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the SIM Registration Act permit an extension of up to 120 days.

Globe has registered just over 35.8 million SIM cards out of its 86.7 million customers as of April 22, 2023. Additionally, it opened 147 Stores and 25 EasyHubs as on-site assistance centers as part of its efforts to register its subscribers.

Moreover, the company partnered with local government units (LGUs), grocery stores, and shopping malls to set up assisted registration booths in over 100 locations across the country. Since January, Globe has routinely participated in National Telecommunications Commission-led SIM Registration Caravans to reach subscribers in remote areas.

Its SIM registration platforms are also available around-the-clock. Users of Globe and TM Prepaid SIMs and Globe At Home Prepaid WiFi can register their SIMs for free via the GlobeOne app and the Globe website [https://ift.tt/ky5p43A].
