Globe tests successful on VoLTE Roaming with Airtel India

Globe Telecom said it has successfully performed technical tests on outbound and inbound VoLTE Roaming with Airtel of India.

According to the telco, this is part of its preparations for some overseas operators to switch from legacy networks.

Globe cited that they're doing this to show that it wants to provide customers with "an excellent and sustainable international roaming experience." It added that Voice over LTE (VoLTE) has "faster call setup times and clearer voice quality than 2G and 3G."

Coco Domingo, Globe Vice President for Postpaid and International Business, said:
Globe will continue to innovate and invest in new technologies to ensure that our customers have the best service. We are excited to roll out VoLTE Roaming and provide them with a seamless and enjoyable experience while traveling in foreign destinations.

A number of telecommunications companies in other countries intend to phase out their 2G and 3G networks in favor of the more efficient 4G and 5G networks. Globe's international roaming customers connected to partners that have already decommissioned 2G and 3G networks will no longer be able to send and receive text messages or make and receive traditional voice calls, including one-time passwords (OTPs) that are required for secure banking transactions.

Customers must have VoLTE-capable handsets and access to VoLTE roaming service to make and receive calls and messages over 4G and 5G networks.

Globe's technical team conducted successful VoLTE Outbound Roaming and Inbound Roaming calls with Airtel India en route to offering VoLTE Roaming. This demonstrates the network's readiness to support both outbound and incoming VoLTE Roaming.

While VoLTE roaming is still being developed, Globe customers in countries that no longer have 2G or 3G access may choose to subscribe to data roaming promos that enable them to make and receive calls and messages via over-the-top (OTT) mobile apps such as Viber, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Through the GlobeOne app, customers can simply register and track their data usage.
