Globe GFiber powers 600+ towns, urges a stop to cable cuts

Globe said it has migrated over 600 towns across the Philippines to full fiber connectivity (GFiber) to improve customer experience by providing faster, more dependable internet.

Residents of these copper-free areas can now enjoy high-speed broadband for remote work, government services, online learning, and small businesses.

In a statement, Globe Telecom said, "This transition is not only a network achievement but also a win for sustainability."

Globe's green network plan reduces its environmental effect, supports its sustainability agenda, and discourages illegal salvaging, which has disrupted connectivity.

'Fiber has no copper, no resale value'

Joel Agustin, Globe Telecom's head of service planning and engineering, made a statement regarding widespread fiber cable cuts:
We've built the infrastructure; now we need to protect it. Fiber has no copper, no resale value, and cutting it only harms the communities that rely on it. That's why we're asking residents to help us safeguard these lines. Connectivity is no longer a luxury; it's a lifeline.

Despite the switch to fiber, intentional cable cutting still occurs owing to misinformation or the misconception that fiber may be sold like copper. 170 or 40 percent of the 425 early fiber communities were intentionally cut. Even in copper theft areas, 63 percent reported fiber-related incidents, underlining the need for public awareness.

Globe warns that cutting fiber lines makes no money but causes considerable harm. A single cable cut can disrupt internet connectivity for homes, schools, companies, and government buildings for hours or days.

Protect internet connectivity

To prevent cable cuts, Globe Telecom urges residents to:
  • Report any suspicious activity near fiber lines or utility poles to the nearest barangay or police station;
  • Support barangay patrols and community watch programs;
  • Work with local officials to include infrastructure protection in ordinances and local plans

These activities aid Globe's education, prevention, and fast response partnerships with local and national governments. The telco encourages Filipinos to maintain digital life's infrastructure and promote a sustainable future as it offers pure fiber connectivity (GFiber prepaid and postpaid) to more locations. – PinoyTechSaga
