Sibol Wild Rift bags PH's first esports gold in 2023 SEAG

Sibol Wild Rift team took home the first gold medal for the Philippines in the esports category of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games after defeating Vietnam, 3-1, in the grand finals on May 7, 2023.

The Philippine representatives finished the tournament unblemished after beating Singapore in the Upper Bracket Semifinals and Vietnam in the Upper Bracket Final to earn a spot in the championship game.

The Filipino squad started strong in the first two games of the grand finals, dominating the Vietnam team. Then, the Vietnamese took the third game. However, the fourth game saw dominant play from the Philippines, ultimately winning the best-of-five series and securing the gold medal.

As a result, Vietnam bagged the silver medal, while Singapore earned the bronze.

Sibol Wild Rift roster for SEA Games 2023 is composed of United Arab Emirates-based Nigma Galaxy, which hosts an all-Filipino lineup: Gerald Gelacio, Justine Richie Tan, Reniel Angara, Golden Dajao, Chammy Nazarrea, and Aaron Mark Bingay. Their coach is Van Alfonso.

To recall, Vietnam was the gold medal winner at the 31st Southeast Asian Games for the Wild Rift Men's Division. Meanwhile, the Sibol Wild Rift Men's team missed out on a podium finish.

For those unaware, SEA Games 2023 is hosted by Cambodia. It is the third time that esports has been contested as a medal event at the biennial regional multi-sport event. Also, Cambodia hosted the event for the first time, and Wild Rift made its second appearance at the Southeast Asian Games.
