Diablo 4 launches: Blizzard's fastest-selling game of all time

wDiablo 4, the long-awaited fourth installment in the renowned Diablo series, has launched. Already, it is the fastest-selling game in the history of Blizzard Entertainment, with the highest pre-launch unit sales on both console and PC.

According to Blizzard, in the four days since early access began on June 1, Diablo IV has been played for 93 million hours, or more than 10,000 years — the equivalent of playing 24 hours a day since human civilization began.

Diablo IV offers cross-platform play and cross-progression on Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation4, and PlayStation5, as well as up to four-player co-op, including two-player couch co-op on consoles.

Rod Fergusson, general manager of Diablo, said:
This is a moment years in the making for the Diablo IV team. We're extremely proud to offer players the richest story ever told in a Diablo game. Players have a range of choices, including personal character customization, equipping personalized skills for battling horrific demons, or collecting Legendary loot to support your playstyle while discovering new ones. Since the game was first announced in 2019, the support from millions of players around the world drove us toward this release of our dark vision of Sanctuary. Hail Lilith, Blessed Mother.

Mike Ybarra, president of Blizzard Entertainment, said:
Our vision at Blizzard is to create legendary experiences for all to share, and Diablo IV is an incredible realization of that vision. With highly customizable gameplay, gripping storytelling, and plenty of options around how to engage with the world, this masterfully crafted expression of the Diablo universe is an outstanding example of what our talented development teams are capable of. Whether you're a veteran of the series or diving into Sanctuary for the first time, we welcome players to the global launch of Diablo IV.

Diablo IV begins fifty years after the events of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls with the return of Lilith, the Daughter of Hatred, to the mortal realm of Sanctuary. Only the bravest of souls will be able to hold against the threat of chaos, as the land has become infested with horrifying creatures. As they fight to return Sanctuary to its citizens, players can tailor their gameplay experience in directions that appeal to them by experimenting with skill trees that demonstrate spells and abilities that complement one another.

Diablo IV features a vast overworld that players can explore as one of five classes: shapeshifting Druids, agile Rogues, elemental Sorcerers, violent Barbarians, or ritualistic Necromancers. There is no golden path; players choose how they wish to advance, whether by pursuing Lilith with laser-like focus or by exploring the shadowy crannies of each region while honing their skills. The land of Sanctuary is filled with a variety of biomes and demons, and players will test their mettle across five regions in more than 120 dungeons and dozens of side-quests, all while battling World Bosses and exorcising afflicted Strongholds in a shared, cooperative open world.

After completing the main storyline, players can engage in robust end-game activities to continue their adventures and develop in strength. From the regularly occurring Helltide to the demonically challenging Nightmare Dungeons, there are numerous methods for players to continue customizing their adventures using the updated Paragon Board system. Also featured are the Whispers of the Dead, which provide Legendary rewards for certain world bounties, and the Fields of Hatred, which provide designated areas for confronting other players and gaining PvP renown. In addition, players can remain immersed in Sanctuary's events through the regular release of Seasons and expansions, which bring new gameplay features, characters, questlines, challenges, and legendary treasure.
